I doubt it.
Every so often, one hears a news item that just doesn't ring true. This is one of them.
The story that a trained serviceman accidentally shot himself in the head with his own service pistol is far fetched, to say the least. I'm not surprised that the story has changed.
I have some experience in observing the military doing their thing. To say they are meticulous when performing safety procedures when handling weapons is an understatement.
The misplacing of the soldier's body while it was being repatriated to Australia is a disgrace, but it's a side issue. The real issue is how the soldier was shot.
The big question is whether the investigating authorities will ever get the truth. The military doesn't have an exemplary record when it comes to investigating incidents within it's own ranks. Perhaps the involvement of civilian authorities will unearth the truth.
For the sake of Kovco's family, I hope so.

This is getting very smelly indeed.
Body moved from the scene against advice of the military police.
Body lost
Conflicting reports on how he dies and all of them so far unlikely.
Evidence form the autopsy that the gun was fired from 'afar'.
Defence force insisting that police investigators undertake a 3 day course in survival techniques before beginning work.
If I were his family I'd take the oportunity to tell the pollies to get lost from the funeral. I'd actually take delight in instructing some bouncers to turn the PM away. Oh Yum - what a delicious thought.
But seriously it's bad enough that they've lost a husband, father and son but to be put through this torture is unforgivable.
Ever since the majority of military administrative/personnell functions have been contracted to civilian firms defence has lost control with more and more contracts being awarded im not surprised the wrong body was sent back to australia.
I feel that with the training military get in weapons handling, the "accidental" theory of Kovco's death is just that, a very poor theory.
The only logical explanation of his death is suicide, and it was from this that the Army was protecting his family. The screaming of his mother over "my poor son wouldn't do that" is likely to expose them to the nasty truth the army was trying to protect them from.
i think this whole series of events is digusting. there is no way that private jacob kovco commited suicide and there is evidence to prove it. the entire scandel was facilitated by the australian government. they should be ashamed of themselves, not only have they covered up the true cause of private kovcos death, but then misplaced his body, and then misplaced documentation.
this is all to coincidental, and i think serious questions should be answered, and i doubt they ever will be. we can only hope for Kovco's family that there is some closure in the near future.
At the moment, I'm leaning more toward suicide as the reason. The inquest revealed that one of his room mates saw him at the lap-top using email just before he died, and his journal states (indirectly) that he had, in the past, had thoughts of suicide.
I wonder if the inquest will look into the nature of the emails Kovco was sending/reading at the time? They would of course all be recorded, and at least indicate weather or not Kovco may have been upset.
I think the media, the public (and the military) need to open up more about suicide. It is a real issue that needs to be faced, and is almost as common as road fatalities.
I'm not saying this was a suicide. I am saying that it needs to be considered, and that people should not be so fearful of mentioning it.
It is appalling to contemplate that the Federal Government can be so obtuse when dealing with Australian citizens. The whole Kovco incident is so unbelievable that it makes one wonder if this is really happening in Australia. The cover ups are risible and worthy of being aligned with the antics of the Pink Panther et al.
Along with the preposterous lies concerning the AWB scandal the Kovco incident is yet another example of why pollies are the most despicable of all Australians. Why these liars are allowed to draw a wage completely confounds me.
The man was an unprofessional, reckless fool. And he deserves a Darwin Award. The man was no hero, and his name should stripped from the war memorial. What a moron. I suppose the taxpayers will pay to raise his kids now.
All i have to say is that its not unknown for a soilder to file the safety pin to make it known as a hair trigger weapon. a soilder died in east timor where he shot himself in the head aswell why is there not a big deal about him?
Come on, how long can this go on. Despite what the family say, soldiers no matter how well they are trained will stuff around. If it was not suicide, it certainly was him 'stuffing around'. I feel empathy for the relatives of the dead soldier, but things must be laid to rest. Personally, I believe he killed himself
This reckless fool is dead. To reopen the case is only going to show his wife that you don't need a long neck to be a goose. If you play around with fire arms someone will get hurt and he did just that.
