I have a friend who was once in the RAF and also flew Concorde. His theory re Britain and then Australia's involvement goes something like this.
There's no way the British Army would let the government go to war without a thundering good reason. Britain stayed out of Vietnam after all. His theory is that Bush was all ready to use nuclear weapons against Iraq and Blair felt the only way to contain that was to 'join in' and pull the reins from the inside. Maybe Australia was persuaded to join on that basis that and hence the cosy relationshiop. We may never know but it makes a weird kind of sense.
What do you think?
Sounds a bit far fetched, even for the US right wing loonies.
Blair, I think, really believed he was doing the right thing, referring to the inaction of the UK government when dealing with Hitler prior to WW2.
Remember Vietnam is a lot further away from the UK than Iraq.
Suffice to say that their reasoning has been shown to be the lie we knew it was a couple of weeks after the invasion.
