Message to the Nation; Was it Really Necessary?

To continue the bitchy mood I'm in, the question needs to be asked whether it was really necessary for John W Howard to go on national television last night?

Did he add anything that we didn't already know?

I'm not downgrading the magnificent contribution the his government has made to mitigating the tsunami disaster. It's just that contributions should be given while resisting the temptation to grandstand.

I suspect that the polition's instincts to reinforce the message of what a great job they're doing is coming to the fore.

Well at least one person - me - totally agrees with you. And after all it is our money he is so conspicuously handing out. I'm happy with that but not if it gets sent with JWH's baggage lable stuck all over it - and even more not if it goes with GWB's philosophical conditions.

I rather liked one of the SMH letters yesterday that suggested Howard could do his bit by going back to the Lodge and donating the millions that would save us all to the appeal!

I still worry about so much money being raised now when every day there are events as bad if not worse. I am getting a little tired of hearing the commercial journalists calling this the world's worst disaster. Oh really?? Tell that to Somalia.

But gee some of the photos are truly dreadful and so many lives have been wrecked. It's hard to imagine how one person can pick up the pieces but to multiply that by millions.....

I wonder about the loan component of the aid. Is a loan 'aid?'

What strings are attached?

Time will tell.
